Objectives: Globally, and particularly in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, overweight and obesity have become serious public health concerns. This scoping review aimed to identify and summarise the available data on the determinants of overweight and obesity among MENA nationalities. Methods: An extensive search of electronic databases, including Google Scholar, PubMed and ProQuest, for articles published from 2007 until 2022 was conducted. A total of 10 articles, of the 333 that were found in the original search, met the inclusion criteria. Data extraction and quality assessment were applied to each of the selected studies. Results: There is an intricate interplay of anthropometric, behavioural, sociodemographic and environmental factors that caused overweight and obesity in this population. Conclusions: A thorough synthesis of the factors influencing overweight and obesity in MENA nationalities was provided by this scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Child birthweight is a measure of fetal nutrition that is primarily determined by prenatal maternal (PM) diet. Child birthweight and child obesity/overweight risk are well established to be linked. Nevertheless, no studies have investigated the impact of PM dietary exclusion on child obesity/overweight risk or body mass index z-score (BMIz). OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to determine whether PM dietary exclusion affected the child's BMIz, obesity/overweight risk, whether child birthweight serves as a mediator of this, and whether PM use of dietary supplements can protect against this. METHODS: Waves within the years 2004-2019 from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children, a population-based cohort study, were analyzed. The participants were aged 0 to 15 years during these waves of the study. Analysis was conducted using logistic and linear models. A total of 5,107 participants were involved in the first wave of the study. RESULTS: The PM exclusion of fish was associated with a higher risk of being underweight at age 14 or 15 years and mild-to-moderate obesity at age 6 or 7 years. The PM exclusion of egg was associated with a higher risk of being overweight at age 14 or 15 years. The exclusion of dairy was associated with more mixed effects. Mediation effects did not reach statistical significance. Moderation effects involving PM dietary supplement use, when they did occur, were associated with higher child BMIz and usually a higher risk of obesity/overweight. CONCLUSIONS: Fish and eggs are likely important parts of PM diets for preventing childhood obesity and overweight. Further studies will be needed to determine reasons for this and the apparent adverse effects of dietary supplements on overweight/obesity risk.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is often considered a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, but recent studies have shown conflicting results regarding the effect of BMI on the prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD). This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between BMI and clinical outcomes of CAD according to sex in a Korean population. METHODS: A total of 3476 patients with a significant CAD who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) were enrolled. Patients were classified as follows according to BMI using the Asia-Pacific cutoff points: underweight (<18.5 kg/m 2 ), normal weight (18.5-22.9 kg/m 2 ), overweight (23.0-24.9 kg/m 2 ) and obese (≥25 kg/m 2 ) patients. Underweight and normal weight patients were further categorized into the lower BMI group, whereas overweight and obese patients were categorized into the higher BMI group. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality. RESULTS: Among women, the higher BMI group showed poor clinical features in the prevalence of hypertension and chest pain presentation, and among men, the higher BMI group had a significantly lower rate of chronic renal failure. At the end of the follow-up period (median 53.5 months), the all-cause mortality rate was lower in the higher BMI group in men, and cardiovascular death and stroke rates were significantly lower in the higher BMI group in women. CONCLUSION: In Korean CAD patients treated with PCI, inverse correlations were observed between the clinical outcomes and BMI, but there were differences between men and women.

The phenomenon of overweight and obesity constitutes a threat for health and children's lives at preschool age. Eating habits formed during this period seriously affect not only future dietary preferences but also the development of diet-related diseases. The purpose of the present study was the assessment of the relationship between the state of knowledge of children's nutrition and parents' eating behaviour and the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children aged 4-6 years. The study was conducted using 200 parent-child pairs. The behaviour and nutritional knowledge of parents was assessed using a questionnaire method. In contrast, anthropometric measurements were taken among the children. Nutritional disorders were noted in 46.5% of children of whom 39.0% struggled with overweight and 7.5% with obesity. The study showed that the children of parents with higher levels of nutritional knowledge were more likely to develop overweight and obesity. It also proved that irregularity of parental food intake predisposed the development of excessive body weight in children (p = 0.0049). Therefore, it is reasonable to undertake further investigation into factors implying the development of nutritional disorders among those youngest. Early recognition of dietary mistakes can contribute to their elimination at an early age.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between sugar-free beverage (SFB) intake and childhood obesity among Chinese children is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To describe the status of SFB consumption among children and adolescents in China and assess the association between SFB intake and different types of obesity. METHODS: The study was based on the baseline data of an ongoing cohort project named Evaluation and Monitoring on School-based Nutrition and Growth in Shenzhen (EMSNGS). Food frequency questionnaires were used to collect information on SFB consumption in 3227 students aged 9-17. Physical and clinical examinations were conducted by trained investigators and clinicians. Multivariable binary logistic regression models were performed to assess the association between SFB intake and general obesity, overweight/obesity, abdominal obesity, metabolically unhealthy overweight (MUOW)/metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). RESULTS: The median age of the participants was 13.28 years. Among the participants, 55.2% were boys, and 66.1% were adolescents. The median SFB consumption was 16.67 mL/d. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, each 100 mL increase in daily SFB intake was associated with an increased risk of overweight/obesity (OR = 1.14; 95%CI: 1.06-1.23), abdominal obesity (OR = 1.12; 95%CI: 1.03-1.23), and MUOW/MUO (OR = 1.12; 95%CI: 1.02-1.21), respectively. Stratified analyses showed that family income may have an impact on the association between SFB intake and overweight/obesity (P for interaction = 0.021) and abdominal obesity (P for interaction = 0.031). CONCLUSION: SFB intake was positively associated with childhood obesity in Chinese children, particularly among individuals with high-income families.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is an effective, minimally invasive gastric remodeling procedure to treat mild and moderate obesity. Early adoption of ESG may be desirable to try to halt progression of obesity, but there are few data on its efficacy and safety for overweight patients. METHODS: This was a multicenter, international, analytical case series. Six U.S., 1 Brazilian, 1 Mexican, and 1 Indian center were included. Overweight patients according to local practice undergoing ESG were considered eligible for the study. The end points were percent total weight loss (%TWL), body mass index (BMI) reduction, rate of BMI normalization, and rate of adverse events. RESULTS: One hundred eighty-nine patients with a mean age of 42.6 ± 14.1 years and a mean BMI of 27.79 ± 1.17 kg/m2 were included. All procedures were successfully accomplished, and there were 3 intraprocedural adverse events (1.5%). The mean %TWL was 12.28% ± 3.21%, 15.03% ± 5.30%, 15.27% ± 5.28%, and 14.91% ± 5.62% at 6, 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively. At 12 and 24 months, 76% and 86% of patients achieved normal BMI, with a mean BMI reduction of 4.13 ± 1.46 kg/m2 and 4.25 ± 1.58 kg/m2. There was no difference in mean %TWL in the first quartile versus the fourth quartile of BMI in any of the time points. However, the BMI normalization rate was statistically higher in the first group at 6 and 12 months (6 months, 100% vs 48.5% [P < .01]; 12 months, 86.2% vs 50% [P < .01]; 24 months, 84.6% vs 76.1% [P = .47]; 36 months, 86.3% vs 66.6% [P = .26]). CONCLUSIONS: ESG is safe and effective in treating overweight patients with high BMI normalization rates. It could help halt or delay the progression to obesity.

OBJECTIVES: Extremes of patient body mass index are associated with difficult intubation and increased morbidity in adults. We aimed to determine the association between being underweight or obese with adverse airway outcomes, including adverse tracheal intubation (TI)-associated events (TIAEs) and/or severe peri-intubation hypoxemia (pulse oximetry oxygen saturation < 80%) in critically ill children. DESIGN/SETTING: Retrospective cohort using the National Emergency Airway for Children registry dataset of 2013-2020. PATIENTS: Critically ill children, 0 to 17 years old, undergoing TI in PICUs. INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Registry data from 24,342 patients who underwent TI between 2013 and 2020 were analyzed. Patients were categorized using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention weight-for-age chart: normal weight (5th-84th percentile) 57.1%, underweight (< 5th percentile) 27.5%, overweight (85th to < 95th percentile) 7.2%, and obese (≥ 95th percentile) 8.2%. Underweight was most common in infants (34%); obesity was most common in children older than 8 years old (15.1%). Underweight patients more often had oxygenation and ventilation failure (34.0%, 36.2%, respectively) as the indication for TI and a history of difficult airway (16.7%). Apneic oxygenation was used more often in overweight and obese patients (19.1%, 19.6%) than in underweight or normal weight patients (14.1%, 17.1%; p < 0.001). TIAEs and/or hypoxemia occurred more often in underweight (27.1%) and obese (24.3%) patients ( p < 0.001). TI in underweight children was associated with greater odds of adverse airway outcome compared with normal weight children after adjusting for potential confounders (underweight: adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.09; 95% CI, 1.01-1.18; p = 0.016). Both underweight and obesity were associated with hypoxemia after adjusting for covariates and site clustering (underweight: aOR, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.02-1.21; p = 0.01 and obesity: aOR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.07-1.39; p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: In underweight and obese children compared with normal weight children, procedures around the timing of TI are associated with greater odds of adverse airway events.

The present study examines whether the association of the neighborhood environment and overweight in children is moderated by age. This was a cross-sectional study of 832 children aged 3 to 10 years living in the city of Oporto (Portugal). Children were recruited under the scope of the project "Inequalities in Childhood Obesity: The impact of the socioeconomic crisis in Portugal from 2009 to 2015." Overweight was defined according to the International Obesity Task Force criteria. Parents completed a self-administered questionnaire capturing sociodemographic characteristics and their perceptions of their neighborhood environment. Logistic regressions were used to examine the influence of parental perceived neighborhood characteristics (latent variables: attractiveness, traffic safety, crime safety, and walkability) on overweight in children. A stratified analysis by age category was conducted. Overall, 27.8% of the children were overweight, 17.4% were aged 3 to 5 years, and 31.8% were aged 6 to 10 years. Children aged 3 to 5 years were more sensitive to the neighborhood environment than children aged 6 to 10 years. For children aged 3 to 5 years, the risk of overweight was inversely associated with neighborhood crime safety (OR = 1.84; 95% CI 1.07-3.15; p = 0.030).    Conclusion: Our study suggests the existence of a sensitive age period in childhood at which exposure to a hostile neighborhood environment is most determining for weight gain. Until today, it was thought that the impact of the neighborhood environment on younger children would be less important as they are less autonomous. But it may not be true. What is Known: • The neighborhood environment may adversely affect children's weight status. However, the moderating role of child age in the association between neighborhood environment and overweight is uncertain. What is New: • The study highlights that the association between the neighborhood environment and child overweight is attenuated by age. It is stronger for preschoolers than for early school-age children.

BACKGROUND: Parental influences on children's eating and physical activity (PA) and consequently on their weight are fundamental. The present study aimed to identify the predominant correlates of childhood overweight/obesity among a variety of parental practices and children's lifestyle indices in a large sample of children in Europe. METHODS: Families from low socio-economic status regions were recruited through schools, located in six European countries (Belgium, Finland, Greece, Spain, Bulgaria and Hungary). Seven thousand three hundred ninety-seven children 4-12 years old and their parents were selected using the FINDRISC-questionnaire. Parental practices assessed included parental role modelling, permissiveness and reward. Children's dietary intake and lifestyle behaviours were assessed through parent-reported questionnaires. RESULTS: Regarding parental practices, it was revealed that being sometimes (odds ratio [OR] = 1.26; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.10-1.43) or rarely (OR = 1.43; 95% CI = 1.21-1.69) physically active with the child was associated with greater overweight/obesity risk, whereas rare permission of computer/mobile/tablet (OR = 0.81; 95% CI = 0.67-0.98) and sometimes (OR = 0.77; 95% CI = 0.68-0.88) or rare (OR = 0.77; 95% CI = 0.66-0.91) reward with PA were associated with lower risk. Regarding children's lifestyle factors, consuming > 3 cups/week fresh fruit juices (OR = 1.28; 95% CI = 1.13-1.45), skipping breakfast (OR = 1.37; 95% CI = 1.17-1.61), absence of 1 h of daily PA (OR = 1.40; 95% CI = 1.24-1.58) and increased daily screen time (ST) (OR = 1.23; 95% CI = 1.09-1.39) were associated with greater overweight/obesity risk. All the variables were adjusted for maternal education, child's sex and age. CONCLUSIONS: These findings emphasize the necessity of family-centered approaches in health promotion and obesity prevention programs for children. Such programs should focus on parents as the primary role models in exerting positive influence and encouraging healthy eating habits, PA, and ST behaviors in their children, which in turn, may have a substantial impact on children's overall weight status.

BACKGROUND: The association between assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) and the body mass index (BMI) of children remains controversial. Confounding by morbidity and other factors associated with parental infertility may have biased studies comparing children born after ART with children born after no treatment. We investigated the associations between different fertility treatments and BMI in children at age 5 to 8 years, adjusting for and stratifying by causes of parental infertility. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This Danish cohort study included 327,301 children born between 2007 and 2012 (51% males, median age at follow-up 7 years). Of these, 13,675 were born after ART, 7,728 were born after ovulation induction with or without intrauterine insemination [OI/IUI], and 305,898 were born after no fertility treatments. Using the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) standards, we defined overweight (BMI ≥ IOTF-25) and obesity (BMI ≥ IOTF-30). We compared children born after ART versus OI/IUI; intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) versus conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF); and frozen-thawed versus fresh embryo transfer and estimated crude and adjusted prevalences of children with overweight or obesity at age 5 to 8 years, prevalence odds ratios (PORs), and differences in mean BMI z-scores. Adjustment was performed using stabilized inverse probability of treatment weights, including parity, year of conception, parental causes of infertility, age, educational level, comorbidities, maternal country of origin, BMI, and smoking as covariates. The crude prevalence of obesity was 1.9% in children born after ART, 2.0% in those born after OI/IUI, and 2.7% in those born after no fertility treatment. After adjustment, children born after ART and OI/IUI had the same prevalence of being overweight (11%; POR 1.00, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.91 to 1.11; p = 0.95) or obese (1.9%; POR 1.01, 95% CI 0.79 to 1.29; p = 0.94). Comparison of ICSI with conventional IVF yielded similar pattern (POR 0.95, 95% CI 0.83 to 1.07; p = 0.39 for overweight and POR 1.16, 95% CI 0.84 to 1.61; p = 0.36 for obesity). Obesity was more prevalent after frozen-thawed (2.7%) than fresh embryo transfer (1.8%) (POR 1.54, 95% CI 1.09 to 2.17; p = 0.01). The associations between fertility treatments and BMI were only modestly different in subgroups defined by the cause of infertility. Study limitations include potential residual confounding, restriction to live births, and lack of detailed technical information about the IVF procedures. CONCLUSIONS: We found no association with BMI at age 5 to 8 years when comparing ART versus OI/IUI or when comparing ICSI versus conventional IVF. However, use of frozen-thawed embryo transfer was associated with a 1.5-fold increased risk of obesity compared to fresh embryo transfer. Despite an elevated relative risk, the absolute risk difference was low.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Shift work increases the risk of breast cancer, but the mechanisms is still under discussion. This study evaluates the relationship between breast cancer and shift work on the basis of overweight and obesity among postmenopausal women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We examined this association using data from a case-control study carried between 2015 and 2019. The study involved 111 postmenopausal women with breast cancer and the same number of control participants. A self-reporting questionnaire was used for data collection. Multivariate logistic regression was conducted to find correlations between variables and determine the strength of relationships. RESULTS: A 2.65-fold risk of breast cancer (OR=2.65; 95% CI: 1.34-5.22) was found among shift work women, compared with postmenopausal women not performing shift work. The association was modified by body mass index, showing a risk rate 9.84 times higher (OR=9.84; 95% CI: 2.14-45.19) among shift work and overweight women, compared to non-overweight women who had never been shift workers. CONCLUSIONS: About 49% of controls and 72% of cases had ever worked in a job that required shift work. The risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women is associated with shift work, especially among overweight women. Some preventive measures to reduce the risk of breast cancer, in particular regarding a healthy lifestyle and weight control in this group of working women, should be implemented.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to pesticides may be related to overweight and associated comorbidities. The aim of this work was to evaluate occupational exposure to pesticides, overweight and associated comorbidities among farmers in Southern Brazil. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included a random sample of 257 farmers, living in the municipality of Mafra and Planalto, southern Brazil. Data on pesticide use and overweight prevalence from farmers were collected using an in-person interview questionnaire, followed by blood collection and biochemical analyses. RESULTS: Pesticide exposure was positively correlated with body mass index, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, triglycerides and glucose levels, presence of hypertension and metabolic syndrome. Besides that, the fact of being exposed to pesticides represents a decrease of no protein thiol groups. Furthermore, the main pesticides used by farmers have hepatic toxicity. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that exposure to pesticides may be associated with overweight and associated comorbidities. Further studies are required to validate our findings and elucidate the specific mechanisms by which these pollutants contribute to the development of overweight.

BACKGROUND: Nurses are a high-risk group for overweight and obesity due to high stress, low-labor medical work, irregular diet, and lack of exercise. There is scarce information on relationship between job characteristics and overweight and obesity among nurses. This study aimed to answer the question. Does the nature of the work including job position, seniority relate to overweight and obesity among nurses? Their incidence was also investigated. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of nurses who underwent annual checkups during 2007 to 2016 in a medical center. Overweight was defined as a body mass index between 24 and 27 kg/m 2 . Obesity was defined as a body mass index higher than 27 kg/m 2 . We calculated the prevalence and incidence of overweight and obesity and estimated relative risks using logistic regression. RESULTS: Overall, 4253 participants were enrolled for the incidence of overweight and obesity. We found that junior staff, administrative directors, working in intensive care units, and old age had a high possibility of overweight. Junior staff, administrative directors, old age, and male sex tend to be obesity. Overweight and obesity occurred rapidly in the first 2 years of their career. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that policies should be set up to achieve the goal of workplace health promotion. Health plans focusing on these factors may help nurses avoid obesity and overweight. The director of the hospital should keep track of the health checkup database to confirm the benefits of its long-term implementation.

A review of the literature showed that there were only a few studies that reported on the dietary patterns of children in South Africa. The aim of the present study was to characterise the dietary patterns of children aged 1-<10 years who were studied during the Provincial Dietary Intake Survey (PDIS) in 2018 and to investigate the socio-demographic predictors thereof, as well as the associations with stunting and overweight/obesity. Dietary pattern analysis was conducted within three age groups, namely 1-<3-year-olds, 3-<6-year-olds, and 6-<10-year-olds using iterated principal factor analysis with varimax rotation and 24 h recall data from the PDIS. The dietary patterns that emerged seem to be far from ideal. Energy-dense, nutrient-poor patterns were included in the top three strongest patterns in all three age groupings that were investigated. Few of the dietary patterns included vegetables other than starchy vegetables, fruit, dairy, quality proteins, and unrefined carbohydrates. There were no associations between any of the dietary patterns and stunting or overweight/obesity in the children. Key predictors of greater adherence to the mostly unhealthy patterns included indicators of a higher socio-economic status in all three age groups, as well as having an obese mother in the 6-<10-year-old group. Key predictors of greater adherence to the mostly healthy patterns were a higher wealth index and having an obese mother in the two younger groups, with no predictors in the 6-<10-year-old group. We conclude that the dietary patterns of children in the Western Cape contain strong elements of the energy-dense, nutrient-poor dietary patterns. Interventions to improve the dietary intake of children should be directed at both poorer and higher income communities.

Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption and inadequate moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) have been suggested as potential contributors to overweight/obesity during childhood or adolescence; however, the results of previous studies are inconsistent. It was crucial to estimate the independent and joint association of SSB consumption and inadequate MVPA for childhood and adolescent overweight/obesity. The "Surveillance for Common Disease and Health Risk Factors Among Students in Jiangsu Province 2021-2022" initiative provided us with representative population-based data that we studied. SSB consumption and inadequate MVPA were determined by self-reported SSB habit and MVPA frequency (days/week). The body mass index for each gender and age subgroup was used to identify those who were overweight or obese. With stratified analyses to ascertain differences in age or gender, we employed the logistic regression model to assess the association of SSB and MVPA with overweight/obesity and applied the likelihood ratio test to explore the interactions. Approximately 38.2% of the study population (119,467 students aged 8-17) were overweight/obese. After adjusting covariates, SSB consumption or inadequate MVPA was associated with overweight/obesity (OR = 1.05, 95% CI = 1.02-1.07; and OR = 1.07, 95% CI = 1.03-1.10). In comparison to students with "no SSB consumption and adequate MVPA", those with "SSB consumption and inadequate MVPA" had a higher risk of being overweight/obese (OR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.08-1.18). Regardless of age and gender subgroups, the correlation of SSB and MVPA alone and together with being overweight/obese was generally similar, with the adolescent group aged 13-17 years (OR = 1.15, 95% CI = 1.09-1.22) and females (OR = 1.09, 95% CI = 1.02-1.17) being more susceptible. Moreover, there was a significant interaction between SSB consumption and gender (p < 0.001), as well as between SSB consumption and inadequate MVPA (p = 0.008). Hence, SSB consumption in students is significantly associated with overweight/obesity, especially when MVPA is inadequate. In light of the rapidly expanding childhood and adolescent obesity epidemic, proper attention should be given to these modifiable behaviors, particularly SSB and MVPA.

BACKGROUND: Globally, the prevalence of childhood obesity has increased considerably, including in Indonesia. Obesity results from multifactorial interactions at the personal, familial, and environmental levels. However, little is known about the factors associated with overweight/obesity among children in Indonesia. This study is intended to identify personal, familial, and environmental factors associated with overweight/obesity in children aged 6-12 years in Indonesia. METHODS: Study design was a secondary data analysis using the Indonesia Family Life Survey in 2014/2015, focusing on 6,090 children aged 6-12 years. The questions covered the child's body mass index and potential personal, familial, and environmental factors. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the personal, familial, and environmental factors. RESULTS: The mean age of participants was 8.9 years (SD = 2.0); 51.0% were boys; 9.4% were overweight; and 8.1% were obese. Overweight and obesity were associated with age [AOR 1.09 (95% CI 1.04-1.14)], having an overweight [AOR 1.93 (95% CI 1.58-2.36)] or obese [AOR 3.36 (95% CI 2.43-4.61)] father compared with a normal father, being of Chinese [AOR 9.51 (95% CI 1.43-79.43)] or Javanese [AOR 1.60 (95% CI 1.16-2.24)] ethnicity compared with Sundanese ethnicity, and residing in an urban area [AOR 1.36 (95% CI 1.10-1.70)]. A lower risk of child overweight/obesity was associated with the father's perception [AOR 0.56 (95% CI 0.38-0.80)] and mother's perception [AOR 0.66 (95% CI 0.43-0.98)] of the child's food consumption as being less than adequate compared with adequate. CONCLUSIONS: Risk factors in children for overweight/obesity were older age, having an overweight/obese father, membership of certain ethnic groups, and urban residence. The main protective factor was parents' perception that a child's food consumption was less than adequate. Health promotion programs focused on these factors could help control or prevent childhood obesity in Indonesia.

The prevalence of overweight or obesity increased rapidly over the past decades in most countries, including China. However, little evidence exists about the effects of long-term exposure to PM2.5 components on overweight or obesity, particularly in developing countries. We measured different weight stages according to body mass index (BMI), and investigated the effects of exposure to PM2.5 components (ammonium [[Formula: see text]], sulfate [[Formula: see text]], nitrate [[Formula: see text]], black carbon and organic matter) on different BMI levels in middle-aged and elderly people of China. Our study explored the effects of single and multiple air pollution exposures on overweight and obesity by using the Generalized Linear Model and Quantile g-Computation model (QgC). This study found a significantly positive association between five PM2.5 components and overweight/obesity. In the QgC model, there was still a positive association between multiple exposure to PM2.5 components and overweight when all PM2.5 components were considered as a whole. In addition, males, the elderly, and urban residents were also more sensitive to five PM2.5 components.

Unhealthy diets, physical inactivity and high body mass index (BMI) are preventable risk factors for non-communicable diseases throughout a person's lifespan. The higher prevalence of these risk factors in children from lower socio-economic groups has been generally observed. The aim of this study is to explore the effect of parents' socio-economic conditions on children's consumption of fruit, vegetables and sugar-sweetened drinks, and inactivity, sedentary behaviour, overweight and obesity. This study used data from the sixth cross-sectional survey of the surveillance "OKkio alla Salute" (Italian COSI), involving 2467 schools and 53,275 children in 2019. All the information was collected through four questionnaires addressed to parents, children, teachers and head teachers. The weights and heights of the children were measured with standard techniques and equipment to classify overweight/obesity according to the WOF-IOTF cut-offs. The results showed a high percentage of children who do not adhere to health recommendations and a high prevalence of overweight and obesity. In particular, "less healthy" behaviours and higher BMI were more frequent in children from families with a lower socio-economic status and those residing in Southern Italy. These findings highlight the need for effective interventions that address the differences in these health-related behaviours.

PURPOSE: Phthalate esters have been a research hotspot recently owing to potential obesogenic activity, but conflicting results have been reported. This case-control study was designed to investigate whether there was an association between phthalate metabolites and childhood obesity in China. METHODS: A total of 240 pairs of obese/overweight children and age- (±3 months) and gender-matched controls were recruited. Nine phthalate metabolites were analyzed in the first morning urine sample. Physical activity and dietary intake were recorded using validated questionnaires. RESULTS: In monofactor analysis, the levels of monomethyl phthalate (MMP) and monobutyl phthalate (MnBP) in controls were significantly higher than those of overweight/obese children (p < 0.05). Moderate physical activity (p = 0.004), consumption of vegetables, fruits, and tonic were significantly higher in controls (all p < 0.05), and consumption of fried food, western fast food, carbonated drinks, and juice were higher in cases (all p < 0.05). After adjusting for physical activity and dietary intake, neither MMP [OR = 0.825, (95% CI: 0.559-1.217)] nor MnBP [(OR = 0.808, 95% CI: 0.556-1.176)], were significantly associated with obesity. In all models, moderate physical activity was negatively associated and high glucose high fat dietary patterns were positively associated with the risk of childhood obesity (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Diet and physical activity, but not phthalate metabolites were associated with childhood obesity. Further studies are needed to verify our findings. The trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT05622513.

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle behaviours related to diet and physical activity are associated with increased risk of obesity and evidence suggests that associations might be stronger when a synergetic effect is examined. OBJECTIVE: To examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between diet, screen time (ST) and step recommendations and risk of overweight and obesity in European preschoolers participating in the ToyBox-study. METHODS: In this cluster-randomized clinical trial, 718 children (51.4% boys) from six European countries participated. Parents filled out questionnaires with information on socio-demographic status, step recommendations and ST. RESULTS: Longitudinal results indicate that participants having a low Diet Quality Index (DQI), not meeting ST and step recommendations at T0 and T1 had higher odds of having overweight/obesity at T1 (odds ratio [OR] = 1.116; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.104-2.562) than those children having a high DQI and meeting ST and step recommendations at T0 and T1. Similarly, participants having a high DQI, but not meeting ST and step recommendations at T0 and T1 had increased odds of having overweight/obesity (OR = 2.515; 95% CI = 1.171-3.021). CONCLUSIONS: The proportion of participants having a low DQI, not adhering to both step and ST recommendations was very high, and it was associated with a higher probability of having overweight and obesity.
